Autism – Communication Challenges

Before age one, most children begin to babble which is a significant step in the language learning process of every child. By the first birthday, most developing toddlers say a word or two, point to objects they want or want to show to someone among other things.

By contrast, young children with autism tend to be delayed in babbling, speaking and learning to use gestures. Some infants who later develop autism babble during the first few months of life before losing these communicative attitudes.

Others experience significant language delays and don’t begin to speak until much later.

Children with autism have less frequent babbling, consonants, words, and word combinations by age two and three. Also their gestures are less often integrated with words.

When language begins to develop, the person with autism may use speech in unusual ways. Some find it difficult combining words into meaningful sentences. They may speak only single words or repeat the same phrase over and over. Some go through a stage where they repeat what they hear verbatim (echolalia).
